The Mazda 3 was launched in 2004 replacing the Mazda 323 or Protege like is was known in Canada. And since its released it has become the most sold Mazda vehicle. A more performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 is marketed as MazdaSpeed3 in Canada with a 2.5L engine.
The Mazda 3 is available with two engines a 2.0L 148HP DOHC 16-valve engine and optional 2.5L 167HP DOHC 16-valve engine. In Europe the Mazda 3 is also available in a 1.6L diesel engine and 2.2L with 182HP diesel sport engine.
The Mazda3 was well received by the general public breaking sales records and having having one of the best performance and handling in its class. In 2006 the Mazda 3 was the second best-selling car in Canada. The Mazda 3 is based on the Ford C1 platform, shared with the Ford Focus and Volvo S40, it also shares the same platform and some parts with the Mazda 5.
In 2007 the Mazda 3 received a minor face-lift, with a few exterior, interior and mechanical changes.In Canada, the 2008 model year was replaced in Spring 2008 and an additional trim level included the Sport GX with a 2.0L engine, the previous models used a 2.3L engine.
The Mazda 3 GS sedan received standard 16-inch alloy wheels, previously only available with the moonroof option, while the GX had 15-inch alloy wheels added to the convenience package (which includes steering-wheel mounted audio controls, power windows, power locks, and remote entry.
Pictures and videos of the second generation Mazda 3 were released in October 2008, Mazda has restyled the exterior to reflect its current design language and a dual exhaust. Two engines are offered in the US and Canada market, the now standard 2.0L and a 2.5L engine which is also used with the Mazda 6.
Mazda unveiled the 2010 Mazda 3 in the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2008, a slightly larger design than the previous Mazda3 and and is available in "i" and "s" versions. The Mazda3 "i" is powered by a 148HP, 2.0L engine while the Mazda 3 "s" is powered by a 167HP 2.5L engine adapted from the Mazda6. The Mazda 3 hatchback (Mazda 3 Speed like its known in Canada) was unveiled a few weeks later at the Bologna Auto Show.
